In 1942, the War Department acquired over 40,000 acres in Durham, Granville, and Person counties in North Carolina for the purposes of establishing an Army installation meant to train infantry, artillery, and engineering troops for deployment and redeployment during World War II. This installation, known as Camp Butner, operated through 1946 and was officially declared excess by the War Department on January 31, 1947 and sold to the State of North Carolina. The Camp Butner Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to telling the stories of those who called Camp Butner home between 1942 and 1946.
Our society was initially established on March 31, 2005 for the purpose of raising funds to erect a statue, commemorating those who served at Camp Butner. That goal was accomplished when "Lightning Mike" was placed in Gazebo Park in 2007. Since 2015, our society has operated the Camp Butner Museum located at Soldiers Memorial Sports Arena, one of the only remaining structures original to the camp still located in Butner, NC.
